The parade lasts for hours and includes fire dancers, Kandyan Dancers and up to about 70 elephants adorned with brightly coloured cloaks and lights. this annual spectacle is well worth a visit. In some areas, Crocodiles can still be seen and the resident Water Monitor lizard, which grows to around 2 metres long can often be seen ambling across the road. The hill country inland is dominated by vast Tea plantations, again, mostly dating back to the times of British rule on the island. Tea is still plucked in the old traditional way, This is a job for the womenfolk, who work for many hours each day, plucking the young leaves from the bushes and placing them in baskets, usually carried on their backs. |
