10c. Fortunately, the island is not subjected to violent weather conditions such as hurricanes and typhoons or
very strong winds.
Normally there are 2 Monsoon seasons a year,  one in April / May and the other October / November time,
although with the changing of the Worlds weather patterns, they are no longer as predictable as they were.
Even during Monsoon seasons the weather is mostly dry and sunny during the day, with storm clouds forming in
the late afternoon, often bringing heavy rain accompanied by thunder and spectacular lightning.
The weather is usually best between late November until end of April which is considered "high season" here.
Detailed month by month weather information will included on these pages soon!

Religion
The vast majority of the population of the island are Buddhist, something in excess of 80% according to published
figures, the remainder being made up of mainly Roman Catholic, Muslim and Tamil (Hindu).  There are many
spectacular Temples, Churches, Mosques all over the island, although in the remote areas you will find mostly
Buddhist Temples with many dating back hundreds of years.  If you plan to visit any of these Temples,  you will
always be invited inside, but, not if you are wearing shorts and T shirt etc.  Remember to take a Sarong or wrap
with you, also ladies will usually be expected to cover their heads.  Dress sensibly and you will find you are made
to feel welcome everywhere!

Culture
Old fashioned family and moral values are still upheld strongly here, do not expect to come to Sri Lanka and
sunbathe topless on the beaches or in the Hotels, it is still classed as an offence here and very strictly forbidden !
Likewise, unlike a majority of European holiday resorts, it is not acceptable to walk around the shops or in the
road wearing only a bathing costume, wise to cover up with a wrap or something similar.  Shorts and a T shirt are
fine.  The people  of Sri Lanka are generally extremely friendly towards foreigners and you will be made to feel
welcome wherever you go.
sunny beaches to the high mountains, you will always find something different.
All the larger towns and Cities offer a vast array of shops, where you can buy almost anything, if you know where
hundreds of small local shops and markets selling everything from fruit and vegetables to clothing where you
can bargain over the price.  The local produce of fruits, vegetables and herbs etc. are widely available, good
quality and very cheap by European standards.  In recent years many modern western style supermarkets have
opened all over the island, where you can purchase most of your daily needs, fresh and cooked meats, fish,
local and imported items, although some imported items can be a little expensive.  There are many local fish
markets where, if you are prepared to get up early, you can always buy fresh fish of almost every type, as well
as jumbo prawns, crabs and lobsters.
Renting a House in Sri Lanka
We always have a large selection of houses available for rent, short term or long term lease.  prices range from
basic local style houses for as little as US$100 per month up to luxury 5 & 6 bed houses, some with pool at
US$1,250 per month.  (Please refer to our Rental Properties pages for details and costs) In most cases the
tenant is responsible for electricity bills, water charges and telephone if connected.   You are able to rent a
house either short or long term as a tourist. In some cases the house owner provides a gardener to take care
of the gardens included in the rental,  But with most properties it is the tenants responsibility to keep the house
and gardens clean and water the plants,  Most long term tenants therefore employ a gardener and housemaid
for these duties,  at an average salary of around US$80 per month each.
If you are considering buying a home in Sri Lanka,  you will find a very large selection of houses and land in our
site pages, listed in price range categories for your convenience.  As a foreigner you are able to buy a house

the transfer of property by foreigners and locals alike @ the rate of 3% on the first US$1,000 and 4% on the
balance based on the amount shown on the transfer deed.  Lawyer fees for all legal work in the transfer of
ownership are typically 1% of the amount shown on the deed.   There are always some excellent investment
opportunities available, with property prices in the past 8 years having risen in excess of 1000% in some areas.
Services

Water:
Very few houses have a government water supply, mostly confined to larger towns and main road positions,
Most of the houses have there own private well,  usually a tube sunk deep into the ground, with an automatic
electric pump, which pumps the water to an overhead tank which in turn supplies water to bathrooms and
kitchen.   Hot water is either supplied by solar panels on the roof or in some cases by electric geysers.    For
houses with a government water supply, this is via a meter and is invoiced monthly by the water authority,
average domestic bill would be around US$5 per month.

Electricity:
Charges for electricity are rather expensive, based on a sliding scale, the more you use the more you pay !!
Unfortunately, the supply can be unpredictable and some areas are subjected to power cuts without prior
warning,  anyone considering renting a house long term would be advised to invest in a small portable
generator, to provide back up power for lights, fridge/freezer and fans in an emergency.  Charges are billed
monthly based on the meter readings.

Telephones / Internet:
The island is well advanced in telecommunications, There are many companies supplying a good telephone
service throughout the island, both mobile and fixed line,  The new CDMA phones have recently been
introduced here and can be purchased and used immediately almost anywhere. They also offer internet
connection via your PC.  Internet service is also good with many servers available,  high speed ADSL is
available in some areas only at present.
Public Transport.
There are frequent and cheap bus services available in most areas around the Island.
is fairly basic by European standards, which is reflected in the very low fares charged.

Taxi's.
Taxi's are widely available everywhere, in the form of cars, vans and minibuses,  charges seem to vary
somewhat, with drivers charging between US$35  and US$75 for the day typically, if you wish to tour the Island
or maybe a day out shopping in the capital city Colombo.

3 Wheelers.
A much cheaper alternative for shorter journeys, are the abundance of 3 wheeled Tuk-Tuk's as they are
known,  you will find hundreds of them in every town and city and in all the main tourist beach areas, they are
inexpensive and provide an excellent means of transport locally.

Self Drive Car Hire.
Hire cars are available in most towns, although we would not recommend this to tourists,  Driving in Sri Lanka is
not for the faint hearted !  Basically, the "rules of the road" are similar to most European countries, the
difference being that 99% of them are totally ignored here !,  Drivers happily attempt to overtake when it's
impossible to do so on whichever side is more convenient at the time and all colours of the traffic lights seem to
mean "go"  The "horn" is used constantly for everything and as a result is meaningless now !
Driving in Sri Lanka is "on the left side" as in the UK, unless of course they choose to drive on the other side.
So unless you have the patience of a Saint and nerves of steel........this option is definitely not for you !

Accommodation.
You will always be able to find a room for the night in most of the major tourist areas, there are many Hotels
and Guest-houses,  ranging immensely depending upon the standard you require. A suite in a luxury 5* Hotel
can be around US$400 per night or a room in a small local style Guest House can still be found for as little as
US$5 per night,  there are numerous Hotels and Guest Houses offering comfortable rooms, often with hot water
and air condition for around US$30 per night including breakfast

Pets.
If you are considering moving to Sri Lanka,  either on a work contract with existing company? Or maybe
thinking of starting a business here?   And you would like to bring your pet dog or cat to Sri Lanka ?
No problem,  we are able to help you with importing your dog  either on a permanent or temporary basis.  Your
pet will have had all the normal inoculations against the major diseases and have proof of this. Please write to
us with your travel details and we will send you an application form to apply for an import licence, return it to us
and we will arrange everything for you!
You cannot apply for a licence more than one calendar month prior to intended travel and your pet MUST have
a certificate from your own veterinary surgeon not more than 14 days prior to arrival in Sri Lanka.
Animal Import Update    There is currently a ban imposed on the import of Cats into Sri Lanka

Health Care.
The state hospital system in Sri Lanka is available to foreigners for emergency assistance ONLY.
You can attend almost any doctor or private hospital throughout the island,  There are many privately run
hospitals available, with the majority being located in and around Colombo the Capital.  The standards are
generally good and the charges are reasonable.   It is also possible to take out your own comprehensive
private health insurance, which is offered either direct from the major hospitals or via insurance companies.
The well known "Apollo" hospital in Colombo provides an excellent service, for emergences, operations and
most kinds of treatment and diagnosis.  This hospital has specialists in most fields on duty.
